Amrita received a grant from the Indo-Canadian Shastri Institute and the Canada Council of Arts to furthur research the Mahari (temple dancer) Tradition of Odissi dance. She traveled to India and had the opportunity to work with Guru Chittaranjan Achareya, disciple of Adi Guru Pankaj Charan Das. Amrita's research topic was the socio-cultural and artistic aspects of the Mahari tradition of Odissi dance and the way of life of the Maharis (temple dancers). Her greatest joy was to have the priviledge to interview one of the last surviving Nachuni (Dance) Maharis, has Sashimani Mahari who is nearly 90 years old.
